The city of Aurora took time to recognize those who have served and given their lives to protect our country with its annual Veterans Day parade, which kicked off mid-morning Saturday at Benton and Water streets.
Ashley Hernandez, 17, a member of East Aurora High School’s NJROTC program, was proudly dressed in her uniform Saturday morning as she walked along Benton Street to meet up with her fellow cadets to take part in the Aurora Veterans Day parade. She was proud to be marching in the annual parade in downtown Aurora. “We’re still young and the school is letting us be a part of this parade and to show respect for the veterans who fought for our freedom,” she said.
“We have a lot of traditions built into the timeline,” Muhammad said. “Veterans Day is always a big thing in Aurora.” Ruth Burgos of Aurora came to the parade and said she has a brother and sister in the military as well as a daughter that joined the NJROTC and was marching in the event. “Veterans Day is a little more personal to me. We want to show respect for those who have fought for us,” she said. “I think veterans still need to get more credit for what they do.
