In two new ads, Newsom and supporters of Bonta are boosting the name recognition of their opponents.

In California primaries, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. The ad supporting Bonta, a Democrat, represents a political tactic in which an incumbent boosts the name recognition of an opponent in the hopes that opponent clears the primary and qualifies for the general.

In other words, the group believes Bonta could easily beat Early. In their minds, a primary victory by a different candidate — such as independent Anne Marie Schubert or Nathan Hochman, a Republican endorsed by California’s state GOP — could result in a more bruising general campaign. A primary victory by Early, on the other hand, would likely allow Bonta to relax and coast to reelection in November given the propensity of California voters to elect Democrats to statewide office. Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans in the state.

FILE - California Attorney General Rob Bonta speaks at a news conference at the Capitol in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022. Bonta who was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, after former Attorney General Xavier Becerra was appointed to the Biden administration, is facing election challenges from Republicans and an independent who fault him for the rising crime rates.

“With reproductive freedom under attack, who can California women count on to defend our rights?” the ad’s narrator says. “GOP-endorsed senator Brian Dahle stands with Donald Trump. Dahle wants to roll back abortion rights, punishing women and doctors.”This will be the defining issue of the 2022 election.
