This week Venus‚ which itself has only recently popped-up in the morning sky—will reach its “greatest brilliancy,” shining brightly close to both Mars and Mercury. On Tuesday it will be in conjunction Mars, the second event in a “triple conjunction” thatMonday, February 14, 2022: Brilliant Venus and Moon in the Beehive Cluster
Venus is still a crescent. Having recently been at “inferior conjunction” with the Sun the second planet from the Sun is now a mere 1.6%-illuminated in the pre-dawn sky. However, since it’s as close to Earth as it gets for some time to come it will nevertheless shine at its brightest—a stunning magnitude -4.2. That’s third only to the Moon and the Sun!
Look above your head after dark in the evening and you’ll see a 97%-lit almost-full Moon just 3º from the Beehive Cluster. However, the glare from the almost-full Moon means you’ll need binoculars and some patience to make out its 100 visible stars.
