Renowned Yolŋu artist Naminapu Maymuru-White has been invited to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most prestigious international arts events.
Here in the isolated reaches of north-east Arnhem Land, surrounded by haphazard piles of priceless artworks, the senior Yolŋu artist paints the Maŋgalili clan's ancient "Milŋiyawuy" songline.Using techniques refined over a decades-long career, her works tell the story of how two ancestral spirits journeyed from the Maŋgalili homeland 200 kilometres south of the art centre, down the Milŋiya river.
At this year's upcoming Venice Biennale, one of the world's most influential celebrations of arts and culture, her work will be presented to global audiences in a multi-canvas installation. Although Ms Maymuru-White has travelled around Australia extensively and even as far as Japan for her work, she initially baulked at the idea making the journey to Venice.
Although she continues to reach new levels of cultural clout in the international art world, Ms Maymuru-White is most proud of passing down her sacred craft to her children. The government is barracking for wage rises and rate cuts. Can it have both? The budget will offer a clue
