Venezuela’s oil minister resigned Monday amid a widening campaign by President Nicolás Maduro to root out corruption in the government and the national oil company, which in recent days has led to the arrests of several government officials on graft charges.

Tareck El Aissami, who had held high posts in government and long been among Mr. Maduro’s closest confidants, said on Twitter that he was stepping down from his post to facilitate the government’s anticorruption probe into state-run Petróleos de Venezuela, or PdVSA. He couldn’t be reached to comment.
