At 90, veteran trainer still has five horses in the barn
The Laffit Pincay Jr. Award was inaugurated in 2004 to annually honor someone “who has served the horse racing industry with integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction.”That raises a question, however. Why hasn’t the 90-year-old, Hall of Fame trainer been honored sooner?
McAnally first came to Del Mar in 1948 as a worker for his uncle, trainer Reggie Cornell. He started training horses in 1952. The rest is a historic career that has resulted in three Eclipse Awards as Trainer of the Year . A South American connection put McAnally onto Bayakoa, who won two 1989 Breeders’ Cup Distaffs under Pincay. Another South American horse, Paseana, won seven straight races from November of 1991 to July of 1992 and gave McAnally a third Breeders’ Cup Distaff win. Both Bayakoa and Paseana were two-time Eclipse winners who are also Hall of Famers.McAnally was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990 along with John Henry.“Ron McAnally is a great horseman,” said Dan Smith.
“Ron McAnally is one of my favorite people,” said Mike Smith. “And I’m one of thousands who would tell you that.”There was one notable addition late Thursday when nominations closed for the Sept. 3 TVG Pacific Classic.
