BREAKING: The Vatican media has confirmed Australian Cardinal George Pell has died aged 81.

Vatican media in Italy confirmed late on Tuesday night he died after complications from a hip replacement surgery.

The operation was completed and he was in the middle of chatting with the anaesthetist when he went into cardiac arrest, it has been reported.
