Matthew Zhen Xuebin, the new Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Beijing, who was ordained on Oct. 25. , approved by the Vatican and China three days after they renewed a deal on appointing bishops in the communist nation for another four years.
Fr Joseph Yang Yu, the secretary of the national body of Chinese bishops, read the letter in full at the start of the ordination liturgy. Some 140 priests — about 80 from Beijing and the others mainly from Matthew Zhan's home province attended the ordination ceremony. Another 500 people, including nuns, lay people, and many relatives of the new Bishop, also attended the liturgy.
He served as the vice-rector of the Beijing seminary and parishes. He has been diocesan chancellor since 2007 and has, in recent years, been responsible for the pastoral care of Catholics speaking Korean, English, and Tagalog in Beijing.Matthew Zhen became the tenth bishop ordained after the Vatican and China signed an agreement in 2018 on appointing bishops in China.
