VA researchers start clinical trials on prostate cancer drug degarelix as possible coronavirus treatment

VA researchers have enrolled 200 veterans in a trial testing whether the prostate cancer drug degarelix could prove to be an effective treatment for men with COVID-19.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has begun a clinical trial of a potential coronavirus treatment for men, utilizing a drug typically used to treat advanced prostate cancer.

The double-blind trial began Friday and will measure outcomes for 200 male veterans with COVID-19 who are randomly given either a single injection of the drug, which lasts for 28 days, or a matching placebo instead. The prostate cancer drug degarelix is one of many existing drugs being investigated as potential treatments for COVID-19.Researchers say the drug is not a viable treatment for women because it helps TMPRSS2 be produced in female bodies, potentially increasing the severity of the disease instead of improving it.
