Utah voters might soon be casting their votes in a special election if Rep. Chris Stewart announces he’s resigning from Congress. JimSpiewak
That would set in motion a unique special election procedure that hasn't been put to the test in Utah.
According to the 2020 law, the state's governor must issue a proclamation to fill the vacant seat within seven days of the vacancy. This proclamation should detail the dates for primary and general elections as well as candidate filing deadlines. Between the proclamation and the primary, significant work needs to be accomplished. Political parties will have to decide whether to nominate through a convention or primary.
"We have a statute that we didn't have in 2017 to guide the process, but its implementation is yet to be seen. We're anxious to see how it works out," Perry said.
