A new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll shows 49% of registered Utah voters own a firearm, while 51% do not. Among those who identified themselves as gun owners, 31% said they have a firearm for personal protection.

A bill that appears headed for passage would create a voluntary firearm restricted list that allows a person to request to be restricted from buying or possessing guns for a certain period of time or indefinitely. Among Democrats in the survey, support jumped to 96%, while for Republicans it was 67%. Only respondents who identified themselves as "very conservative" were under 50% approval.
