Utah Highway Patrol Maj. Beau Mason was appointed as the new deputy commissioner of the Department of Public Safety on Friday.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Public Safety appointed a new deputy commissioner to oversee emergency medical services and the state's school safety program on Friday.

Commissioner Jess Anderson promoted former Utah Highway Patrol Maj. Beau Mason to the role, which was added, to accommodate the additional responsibilities the department oversees. "Deputy Commissioner Mason is a proven leader within DPS, possessing a strong determination with a 'can-do' attitude, demonstrating consistent dedication to our work and mission, and holding himself accountable while leading teams and programs," a department news release stated., which led to the the arrest of 387 drug dealers in 2019. He also served as Anderson's executive officer.

Mason graduated from Southern Utah University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, then went on to earn his master's degree in leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
