KOTA KINABALU: The use of English in government matters should not be seen as a threat to Bahasa Malaysia, says Parti Warisan president Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said the English language has been used in Malaysia and also Sabah and Sarawak since independence without compromising the national language."Using English does not mean we do not respect Bahasa Malaysia. We are still loyal and love the national language," he said during a Facebook discussion over various issues under the theme"Lets Talk”.

He said that the policy on the use of Bahasa Malaysia was also not consistent as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had used Bahasa Malaysia while Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin used English at different overseas events. "There is no consistency," he said, adding that the nation needs to have consistency in its policies to attract foreign trade and investments.
