USC basketball coach Andy Enfield, who led the Trojans to many NCAA tournament appearances but struggled to win over fans, is leaving for SMU.
USC men's basketball coach Andy Enfield is leaving the Trojans with a solid record that belies struggles that marked his tenure in Los Angeles. Enfield has accepted the SMU basketball job, taking over the Mustangs as they make the challenging move from the American Athletic Conference to the ACC on July 1, SMU announced Monday. USC is beginning a search for his replacement ahead of the Trojans' move to the Big Ten this summer.
The Trojans reached the Elite Eight during the 2020-21 season and piled up wins that matched crosstown rival UCLA's surge, but USC could not consistently attract fans to the Galen Center outside of rivalry games. Enfield landed a string of high profile recruits, most recently adding star freshmen Isaiah Collier and Bronny James, son of Lakers star LeBron James.
