WASHINGTON - Pionnier du mouvement des droits civiques, compagnon de route de Martin Luther King, le représentant démocrate John Lewis est décédé vendredi à l’âge de 80 ans, a annoncé Nancy Pelosi, la présidente de la Chambre des représentants.
“Il aimait tant son pays qu’il a risqué sa vie afin que ce pays puisse tenir ses promesses”, a commenté l’ancien président américain Barack Obama. “Décennie après décennie, il n’a pas seulement fait don de sa personne à la liberté et à la justice, il a également inspiré des générations qui ont suivi son exemple.”
Proche de Martin Luther King qui l’a pris sous son aile alors qu’il n’avait que 18 ans, John Lewis était le dernier survivant des orateurs qui ont pris la parole lors de la grande marche des droits civiques organisée en 1963 à Washington.
