Minneapolis officials brace for more violence after a second night of demonstrations over the death of an unarmed African American in police custody saw angry crowds looting stores and setting fires
Protesters wearing face masks walk with a Black Life Matters sign after a white police officer was caught on a bystander's video pressing his knee into the neck of African-American man George Floyd, who later died at a hospital, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, US, May 28, 2020.
"In the coming days we will have an all-out effort to restore peace and security in our city," said Mayor Jacob Frey, who has demanded the arrest of the officer allegedly responsible for Floyd's death on Monday. "But I will not allow to continue to increase that deficit by re-traumatising those folks in our community."
The protests were sparked by widely-shared video showing a handcuffed Floyd gasping for breath and pleading as a policeman pressed his knee on the suspect's neck after detaining him for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill.
