The Late Show host Stephen Colbert has expressed remorse over jokes he made about Princess Catherine prior to the revelation of her cancer diagnosis - but stopped short of issuing an official apology.
American comedian Stephen Colbert has stopped short of issuing an apology as he addressed his controversial jokes about Princess Kate’s absence from the public eye, declaring:"A lot of my jokes have upset people in the past, and I’m sure some of my jokes will upset people in the future".
“I mean, a lot of my jokes have upset people in the past, and I’m sure some of my jokes will upset people in the future,” he said during Monday night's show. In his remorseful remarks, Colbert said his quip “upset some people”, noting he had made them before Princess Kate’s diagnosis was revealed. “I don’t know whether her prognosis is a tragic one. She’s the future Queen of England and I’m sure she’s getting the best possible medical care, but regardless of what it is, I know, and I’m sure you know, far too many of us know, any cancer diagnosis, of any kind is harrowing for the patient and the family and though I’m sure they don’t need it from me, I, and everyone here at the late show, would like to extend our well wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough.
Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter criticised Colbert and said he might be “full of regret for himself” but The Late Show host “didn’t apologise”. “Buckingham Palace said she'd had surgery, and would be away for several weeks. The Princess of Wales didn't disappear, she was recuperating.
