The United States has updated its definition of 'healthy' food for the first time in 30 years, removing items like white bread while adding nutrient-rich options like eggs and salmon. The change comes amid a growing crisis of diet-related chronic diseases, prompting the FDA to develop a new symbol to help consumers identify healthier choices.
What counts as ‘healthy’ food in US? After 30 years, white bread and cereals are out while eggs and salmon are inWASHINGTON, Dec 20 — The United States has redefined what qualifies as “healthy” food for the first time in 30 years, striking items like white bread from the list while welcoming nutrient-rich options such as eggs and salmon, officials said Thursday.
The Food and Drug Administration also announced it is developing a new symbol to help manufacturers quickly signal to consumers that a food meets the “healthy” criteria. Alarming statistics highlight the urgency of the issue: 77 per cent of Americans exceed recommendations for saturated fat intake, 63 per cent surpass limits for added sugars, and a staggering 90 per cent consume too much sodium.“The healthy claim has been updated to help ensure that consumers have access to more complete, accurate and up-to-date nutrition information on food labels,” added Jones.
