The US government has been drawn into a legal battle with RMS Titanic Inc as the company plans an expedition to the Titanic wreckage in 2024.
Salvage rights to the wreck were granted to the Georgia-based firm by a United States Federal Court order in 1994 before it was reconfirmed in 1996.
The government’s opposition to the planned expedition comes more than two months after five people were tragically killed when the Titan submersible they were travelling in imploded on their way to visit the wreckage. Their argument states that entering the Titanic’s severed hull or physically altering or disturbing the wreck is regulated by federal law and its agreement with Britain, AP reported.
“At this time, the company does not intend to cut into the wreck or detach any part of the wreck,” they added. They argued RMST needs approval from the US Secretary of Commerce which oversees the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who they would work collaboratively with on the voyage.
