KUALA LUMPUR: A key witness in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial has denied that some US$800,000 (RM3.36mil) deposited into his foreign bank account was a “reward” from fugitive financier Low Taek Jho.

Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin , 43, who was a former special officer to Datuk Seri Najib Razak, disagreed with a suggestion from defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah that the money was intended for him because he had dispensed favours to Low, better known as Jho Low, for many years.

He said the bank advised moving the money either to a company under his name or a different bank account of his. The transfer, however, was unsuccessful and Amhari claimed that he did not know what happened to the money until now. This loan was neither repaid nor was there any agreement signed between Jho Low and Amhari when it was given.

Shafee: In what context did the money come into your possession? Not in another political context, I hope. The witness said he wanted to repay Jho Low from the proceeds he was expecting to get from selling his property in Kota Damansara, but that the property went unsold. The fifth day of the trial also saw some lighthearted moments in court in an otherwise serious proceeding.
