UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher calls for a massive increase in international aid to help Syria rebuild after the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad.
DAMSYIK: The United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, urged for a massive outpouring of aid for Syria as the country strives to rebuild its society following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad. Fletcher emphasized that Syria requires substantial financial support, as seven out of ten people in the country live in poverty and are in dire need of assistance.
'I want to see a massive increase in international support, but this effort depends on donors. Syria has long suffered from a shameful lack of funding, and now there is an opportunity for renewal,' he said. 'Syrian people are trying to return when it is safe to do so, to rebuild their country, to rebuild their communities and their lives. We need to be behind them and respond to this moment of hope. And if we don't do it quickly, I fear this opportunity will be lost,' Fletcher said in a phone interview while visiting Syria. The UN official stated that only one-third of the US$4 billion (RM18 billion) appeal to assist Syria has been successfully funded so far. 'There is a great humanitarian need for things like water, food and shelter. But there are also other needs in terms of government services, health, education, and then the long-term needs of reconstruction and development. 'We need to be ambitious in our requests to donors. The Syrian people demand that we deliver, and they are right to demand that we deliver. The world has not been supporting the Syrian people for over a decade,' he stressed. During his visit, Fletcher met with representatives of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), the group that led the offensive to overthrow Assad, including its leader Abu Ahmed al-Jolani and Interim Prime Minister, Mohammad Al-Bashir
