To face the food crisis, suboptimal land can be converted into productive agricultural land through the sustainable application of technology. It requires synergy from many parties based on long-term planning.
Global Report on Food Crisis
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2023 and the Annual Report of the Directorate General of Food Crops in 2023, during the year 2022, out of the total rice production in Indonesia which reached 54.75 million tonnes, around 56.02 percent was produced by farmers in Java. Meanwhile, for corn and soybean, Java's contribution ranged from 46.1 percent to 70.9 percent.
On the other hand, looking at the long-term development planning for 2025-2045 which is aimed at economic transformation, where, according to Ari Kuncoro , transformation is not only defined as a shift in Secondly, there is still potential to utilize suboptimal land outside of Java for the development of food crops.
The development of tidal land in South Sumatra initially began with a series of research-based activities, which were implemented concurrently with the placement of transmigrants in new areas. Some of these activities included the Tidal Swamp Agriculture Research Project I from 1982-1986 and SWAMP II from 1986-1992. This was followed by the Integrated Swamp Development Project from 1994-1997, and the South Sumatra Tidal Land Agricultural Business Development System Project from 1998-2000.
