Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad (PNSB) are constructing a traditional Selangor Long Roof House at the university's Malay Heritage Museum. The project, inspired by a historic Bugis house in Sabak Bernam, aims to preserve cultural heritage, enhance interdisciplinary learning, and strengthen ties between the university and the community. With a funding of RM250,000 from PNSB, the house will serve as an experiential educational resource featuring unique architectural elements for studies in architecture, culture, history, and more.
Universiti Putra Malaysia ( UPM) and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad ( PNSB) have partnered to construct a traditional Selangor Long Roof House ( Rumah Bumbung Panjang Selangor) inspired by Bugis architecture at the Malay Heritage Museum, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication.
This initiative aims to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen university-community ties. The house will be based on a historic Bugis Long Roof House in Sabak Bernam, built around 1890, and will serve as an experiential learning resource for students, researchers, and the public. The project, funded by a RM250,000 contribution from PNSB, aligns with the Selangor State Government's commitment to promoting cultural values and identity. UPM's Deputy Chancellor, Datuk Prof. Ir.
Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd. Sadullah, emphasized that the university's role extends beyond producing graduates to preserving national memory and making heritage relevant to modern education. The house will feature distinctive architectural elements such as a loft, long verandah, perforated carvings, adjustable window shutters, and bee-motif roof decorations, providing rich material for interdisciplinary studies in architecture, language, culture, history, heritage tourism, and community education.
The Malay Heritage Museum already houses four traditional Malay houses from Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, and Terengganu, and this addition will expand its collection and research on Malay domestic narratives.
