On 24 June, four-year-old Unako Khala was burned on his chest, arm and ribs. Neighbours say he was swinging on a gate when the woman threw boiling water at him. She has appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court, charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, according to police spokesperson F C van Wyk. She has not pleaded and her next appearance is on 14 July.

Activist Samkelo Njanana, who took part in the march, said the marchers were angry. ‘People will attend every court case to show solidarity to the family of the victim,’ said Njanana. Brown said child abuse should be reported to police and to the Department of Social Development. ‘It is our responsibility as parents, guardians, community members, and caregivers to not look the other way, and to report cases of neglect and abuse.
