Rescue and relief efforts are underway with scores of people feared dead after a massive landslide struck a remote village in northern Papua New Guinea.

A landslide has reportedly killed about 100 people in a remote village of northern Papua New Guinea. The landslide occurred in the Kaokalam village in Enga province, about 600km north of the capital Port Moresby, about 3am on Friday when most of the residents were asleep.

Photos and videos posted on social media indicated the scale of destruction. The Australian government said it was "making enquiries with local authorities to determine whether any Australians have been affected" and offered its sympathies to those affected. Sitting just south of the equator, the area gets frequent heavy rains and has experienced flooding this year.
