Unreliable buses that fail to arrive as scheduled, then arrive in quick succession bunched together, can force riders to turn instead to private cars, community leaders and transit experts said.
In the meantime, the city and the CTA have undertaken measures at various places across the city. Thedebuted in late 2015, putting in place dedicated bus lanes and enhanced stations, among other features. Plans this year and next call for installing a bus lane along parts of Chicago Avenue, and near West 79th Street and Columbus and Kedzie avenues on the South Side putting in bus-only lanes and signals that allow buses to jump the queue at a light.
The Chicago Department of Transportation received a federal grant to expand transit signal priority to more bus routes in the coming years, which extends a green light to allow an approaching bus to pass through the intersection. Chris Franklin, 41, regularly takes the bus south to pick up his daughter from high school. Often, his 5-mile trip can take an hour and a half in the middle of the afternoon, he said. Some buses on the route end at 95th Street, blocks before his stop, meaning he has to get off and transfer to another #4 running an extended route farther south. Other times, he has to wait as drivers change shifts along the route.
Compounding the problem is that public transit often fails to take into account people who work nontraditional or multiple jobs, who are not commuting to a 9-to-5, she said. “The CTA is absolutely committed to improving the service,” he said. “On this route in question, roughly 77% of the service in the month of June was on schedule. While that number is OK, it’s not good enough, and we are committed to making it better.”
