Australia's higher education watchdog will ramp up cooperation with international regulators to tackle industrial-scale contract cheating, which is challenging institutions the world over
in 2014 for the first time exposed the rise of cheating services, focusing on the popular MyMaster site. Despite increased scrutiny, the problem has continued to grow in the years since as increasingly advanced online services proliferate.Last year, the federal government introduced penalties of up to two years' imprisonment and fines of up to $210,000 for contract cheats. The legislation empowered TEQSA to investigate and clamp down on the sites.
"We don’t adhere to the gloomy view that this is anything approaching a systemic problem but we do acknowledge there have been areas of concern about language abilities," he said.There are multiple ways universities can tick off on international students' language abilities in admissions processes and Mr McClaran said the regulator was concerned about the lack of transparency in some providers' use of alternative standards and waivers.
Mr McClaran said the success of international education in Australia had introduced varied risk across the system, with "problematic" over-reliance at some providers.
