KUCHING: The Sarawak government will continue to protect freedom of religion as well as the rights and interests of all races in the state, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier said this was in line with the policy of social inclusivity in the state's post-Covid-19 development strategy."The establishment of the Unit for Other Religions is part of our efforts to strengthen inclusivity.

"It not only aims to provide financial assistance but to unite our multiracial and multireligious society," he said in his Wesak Day message on Wednesday . Unifor was set up in 2017 to look after the welfare of non-Islamic religions and provide financial assistance for the physical development and upgrading of their houses of worship. As Buddhists celebrate Wesak on Thursday , Abang Johari urged them to keep fostering close ties with people of other faiths in the state and country.

"May the Wesak celebration bring joy and harmony to Sarawak and its people, in particular those of the Buddhist faith," he said, wishing all Buddhists a happy Wesak Day.
