Tensions are rising in the UAW's negotiations with Detroit's Big Three automakers after the union rejected Stellantis' contract offer and doubled down on threats to strike.

In a Facebook video Tuesday, UAW President Shawn Fain held up a copy of the Stellantis proposal and threw it into the trash, calling it "a slap in the face." He went on to warn automakers that "the clock is ticking" and his members at the Big Three areUAW is threatening to strike as early as Sept. 15 at any of the Big Three automakers if their contract demands are not met.

Two people briefed on the matter told Reuters that automakers have estimated that the UAW's contract demands could raise the current mid $60-per-hour labor rate to more than $150 per hour. The union says the Big Three can afford it but two of the carmakers have pushed back publicly on the UAW's demands.

GM said in its latest statement on the negotiations that "The breadth and scope of the Presidential Demands, at face value, would threaten our ability to do what’s right for the long-term benefit of the team."Ford, which employs more hourly UAW members than any other automaker, told
