Opinion: Unite Here Local 11 offers false hopes to striking hotel workers

On the website of Unite Here Local 11, the union that represents thousands of striking hotel workers in Southern California, there’s a list of “Quick Links” to help members navigate the site. At the very top of the list is “Pay Dues.”At least the union is honest about its own priorities. Is it being honest with its members?“We have given our lives to this industry. We deserve respect and to be able to afford to live in the city where we work.

It’s certainly true that the cost of living in Southern California is very high and housing is very expensive, more so in areas where high-end hotels are located. But it’s a lie that a new contract for hotel workers is going to pay them enough to solve that problem. On June 22, the union encouraged hotel workers to engage in “civil disobedience” and risk arrest in a demonstration. Politicians showed up to get arrested. One of them was City Council Member Hugo Soto-Martinez, who told reporters, “People who work in L.A. should be able to live in L.A.”Unite Here Local 11 said a survey found that 53% of hotel workers said they’ve either moved in the past five years or will move soon because of the cost of housing.
