'Silencing a stadium or the entire sport shouldn’t be so simple. This team turned it into standard operating procedure.'
Houston Astros relief pitcher Ryan Pressly and Houston Astros Jose Altuve celebrate as the Astros beat the Phillies 4-1 in Game 6 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, in Houston. In the only ballpark they’re beloved and atop a sport they waited five years to silence, the greatest group of Astros ever assembled gathered one final time.
Scandal threatened to implode an infrastructure shaped for sustained success. The team spent three seasons salvaging its reputation. Baseball’s most respected manager arrived to mend wounds and work his magic. Players sought to prove talent, not trashcans, propelled them toward dynastic territory. Faces change and the Astros still ascend. No American League franchise is functioning with such precision. Championship Series appearances have become birthrights. Pennants are purely decorative. The standard here is higher.
Leverage innings created their legacy. Finding one they didn’t win is almost impossible. No team in baseball boasted a better bullpen. Few had a lineup with more postseason pedigree. Pairing the two produced a club incapable of coughing anything up. Houston’s relievers surrendered six runs in 54⅓ playoff innings. Its lineup never lit up scoreboards, but still struck out just 118 times in 13 games, forcing flawless execution from opponents incapable of it.
The championship arrived after the type of game — and series — they’re conditioned to win. Their pitching depth deadened Philadelphia’s potent lineup for five of the six contests. A five-home run outburst in Game 3 became an outlier. The Phillies produced three runs across the final three games. Four Houston hurlers no-hit them during Game 4. Four more held the Phillies to one run on Saturday.
None of the next 10 Phillies reached. Valdez ran off five straight strikeouts between the third and fourth inning. Valdez and Sandy Koufax are the only lefthanded pitchers to ever accomplish that in a World Series game.
