Malaysia berada di ranking FIFA 168 dunia perlu bermain di pusingan pertama bersama 11 lagi pasukan lain mempunyai kedudukan ranking terendah di Asia

Undian kelayakan Piala Dunia 2022 dan Piala Asia 2023 berlangsung di AFC Club House sebentar tadi menyaksikan skuad Harimau Malaya bakal bertembung dengan pasukan yang berada di ranking FIFA 195 dunia iaitu Timor Leste.

Sebelum undian bermula, Malaysia diletakkan dalam pot 1 bersama Kemboja, Macau, Laos, Bhutan dan Mongolia manakala pot 2 menempatkan Bangladesh, Guam, Brunei, Timor Leste, Pakistan dan Sri Lanka. Menurut jadual rasmi perlawanan yang dikeluarkan, skuad Harimau Malaya akan beraksi menentang Timor Leste pada 6 Jun di Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, kemudian bertandang ke gelanggang lawan pada 11 Jun bagi memburu slot ke pusingan kedua.

Umat Islam di negara ini dijangka menyambut Hari Raya pada 5 Jun, iaitu sehari sebelum skuad kebangsaan memulakan kempen kelayakan Piala Dunia 2022/Piala Asia 2023.
