Universities are changing with a more pronounced emphasis on gender equality, say academic leaders.

asked two women leaders in technology to share their insights and observations into the sector.There is not a single person in higher education today with more experience or a more stellar track record than Margaret Gardner.

Gardner’s first gig in academia was as a sessional tutor while undertaking her honours degree in economics back in 1976. From there she worked her way up. And up. “They are much more complex, larger, globalised, and actively engaged with industry. And when I started, 80 per cent of revenue came as an identified bundle once a year from the federal government,” Gardner says.“The pressures and expectations on leaders are also more intense, including public engagement and scrutiny.”

“You have to find ways to safely discuss and test those observations. Because it is those observations that help you understand the impacts of change, to react to and anticipate change and to develop strategy. Getting women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics has become a KPI for universities, says Kate Helmstedt, of Queensland University of Technology.“It’s not because women aren’t good at maths or that they aren’t interested in it, but that we are raised and socialised to believe that maths is not going to be of interest to us, that it’s not exciting and there won’t be a place for us,” Helmstedt says.

“Getting women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics has become a KPI for universities. And once it’s a KPI, then it becomes something universities want to invest in.”
