Ukrainian Independence Day also marked six months since Russia invaded the country. A Ukrainian refugee family living in San Diego sees the day as a bittersweet celebration.
Today is Independence Day in Ukraine and it’s also six months since Russia invaded the country. KPBS reporter Kitty Alvarado spoke with a Ukrainian refugee family living in San Diego from that says today is a bittersweet celebration.
"I so miss home so much. I just want to open the door of my apartment and come in, and I want to see everybody!" Brodsky said. When the war broke out, Brodsky, her husband and their two boys were on vacation. They managed to make their way to San Diego through Tijuana.She said knowing that other loved ones are so far away and in danger is tough but their fighting spirit gives her hope.
