A delegation of Ukrainian MPs visiting federal parliament says more weapons are needed to help defeat Russia and protect democracy.

Ukrainian politicians are urging the Albanese government to join the “tank coalition” as the country prepares to go on the offensive to repel Russian forces.

China has failed to condemn Russia’s invasion and last month outlined a 12-point plan as the basis for peace talks. While Moscow and Beijing have become closer in response to the West’s isolation of Russia, there is speculation Mr Xi wants to play peacemaker to burnish his and China’s image on the world stage.

Ms Mykhailiuk said Ukraine had four points it would pursue as part of peace talks: the return to Ukraine’s 1991 borders when it gained independence; an international tribunal to punish Russian war crimes; frozen Russian assets used to pay reparations; and repair and restoration of Ukrainian infrastructure destroyed in the war such as homes, schools and hospitals and power.

“But this year we need to win. That’s why for us it’s highly important to negotiate on a sustainable, consistent and comprehensive support package to Ukraine hopefully to be in the national budget of Australia that will be voted on in May.”Mr Zheleznyak added: “The war is happening every day, every hour, every minute. If we want to create together victory we need a sustainable supply of armour or money or sanctions, everything that helps to stop Russia and take back our territory”.

“Can you imagine what will happen to the democratic world if Ukraine became tired,” Ms Mykhailiuk said.“We are sure Russia will not stop in Ukraine, that Poland will be the next one, that the Baltic countries will be the next one.
