Ukraine's military conducted an overnight operation on the Russian-occupied Crimea Peninsula.

The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, with navy support, launched the attack from the water and came up near the Olenivka and Maiak settlements on the western tip of Crimea, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Directorate of Intelligence said in a statement."When performing the task, Ukrainian defenders engaged in [a] combat clash with the units of [R]ussian occupiers. As a result, the enemy suffered personnel and equipment losses.

The statement did not specify what the goals of the mission were, despite saying the goal was accomplished. Thursday is Ukrainian Independence Day. The military also shared a video from the supposed mission, which has not been independently verified, that appeared to show Ukrainian forces engaging fire, presumably with Russian troops as they approached the coastline. There's then a cut in which the footage shows, with the help of a flashlight, soldiers hanging a Ukrainian flag before more gunfire is heard.

"Crimea will be de-occupied like all other parts of Ukraine that are unfortunately still under the occupier," he told an international conference on Wednesday, though Russia has shown indication of withdrawing troops.Zelensky has said on multiple occasions that Ukraine would not willingly concede territory to stop the war at the negotiation table, including Crimea.

Ukraine's military started its highly anticipated counteroffensive in June, and while it has made limited progress in recapturing occupied territory, it has run into significant hurdles safely breaking through Russian defensive positions, particularly in the southeast.
