The 2021/22 academic year saw a 53% fall in the number of first-year EU students enrolling at British universities.

“It’s not a big surprise to anyone to see this trend”, says Simon Kemp, a press and communications officer at HESA. The decrease coincides with the introduction of policies that shifted the financial and immigration status of EU students after the one-year ‘transition period’ that followed Britain’s departure from the bloc in 2020.Universities in the United Kingdom attract hundreds of thousands of international students every year.
A similar — though less severe — trend has played out among university staff. The overall number of EU nationals working at British universities has grown over the past few decades. But the total number of EU staff fell for the second year in a row in 2021/22, dropping by 1%. The rising number of students from outside the EU could be a result of policies intended to attract international students, says Ben Moore, a policy manager at the Russell Group, which represents 24 leading universities in the United Kingdom. Among these policies are the re-emergence of visas allowing some students to stay in the country for up to three years after graduating.
