UIW vaults to highest ranking in program history after blowout win in opener

Head coach G.J. Kinne watches his team during University of the Incarnate Word football practice on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022.Walking off the field close to midnight after winning the first game of his tenure at Incarnate Word, G.J. Kinne’s initial thought was to turn the page.

“It’s probably just my personality,” Kinne said. “I’m not a guy that gets super excited about things. I told them, ‘It’s really hard to win in college football.’ So I need to be better at that.”In his first game at UIW, Nicholls State transfer quarterback Lindsey Scott threw for 391 yards and six touchdowns without an interception, averaging 15.6 yards per attempt.

Wideout Taylor Grimes had touchdown receptions of 66 and 55 yards in the first eight minutes, finishing with three catches for 126 yards. Kinne aimed to build on much of what made last year’s offense successful, retaining key pieces of the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich.

What the win says about the strength of the Cardinals compared to last year’s team is something Scott “will leave up to interpretation for everybody else,” he said.
