UIW’s Lindsey Scott Jr. wins Walter Payton Award, capping seven-year journey
Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. made stops at LSU, Missouri and Nicholls, along with a stint in junior college, before finding his feet with the Cardinals.As Lindsey Scott Jr. sat in his room writing out goals ahead of his first season at Nicholls State in spring 2021, he set his sights on the Walter Payton Award — the highest honor available to an offensive player in the FCS.
“Sometimes I get chills up my spine, just knowing it’s the right moment at the right time,” Logan said. “It's just fulfilling to see the resolve. A lot of people may have quit at the time, or wouldn’t have went through as many years as he went through. But you see how it ended up for him.” Scott said his heart was racing “1,000 beats per minute” as he sat just below the banquet stage, flanked by the other two finalists in the last moments before the announcement. His numbers had positioned him as a clear front-runner for the award, but a relaxing morning gave way to more nerves and anxious feelings as the reveal drew closer.
Scott’s winding journey to the pinnacle of the FCS started at Zachary, where as a senior in 2015 he earned Gatorade Louisiana Football Player of the Year during a run to a state championship. After leading East Mississippi to a JUCO national title in 2017, Scott landed at Missouri, expected to be a reliable second option during the final season of eventual second-round NFL draft selection Drew Lock.
Scott found his next opportunity less than 100 miles from home, dropping to the FCS level with Nicholls. After sitting out 2019 due to NCAA transfer rules and watching as the 2020 season was postponed to the following spring due to COVID-19, Scott emerged as a Division I starter for the first time, leading Nicholls to a 4-3 mark in spring 2021 and a 6-5 record that fall.
