Needing to reload Incarnate Word’s roster to maintain the program’s place as an emerging FCS power, new coach Clint Killough embraced the transfer portal, welcoming 14 players from four-year schools through recent weeks.
“The idea of being a transfer portal team year in and year out doesn’t fire me up,” Killough said. “That‘s why it was important for me to sign a solid class.
“For our transfer class, I don’t think we could’ve done a better job, if you want me to be completely honest,” Killough said. “We added really good pieces at multiple positions, some that we lost from attrition, so I’m proud of what we were able to do at the midyear.” The two signal-callers must replace Walter Payton Award winner Lindsey Scott, who set an FCS record with 60 passing touchdowns last season.
“Where he’s at in his career is football, , ‘What is the best situation for me from a football perspective?’” Killough said. “We can present that for him. You’re coming into a culture that is on the verge of being an established FCS powerhouse. That, accompanied with the brand of football that we play, is hard to pass up.
