As members of the underappreciated AAC, the Cougars know a loss can impact them more than...

Wanting to avoid the pitfall they suffered last season at SMU, Jamal Shead and second-ranked UH visit the Mustangs on Thursday night.DALLAS — It’s easy for the University of Houston to want to take a peek behind the curtain.

When the NCAA selection committee reveals its top 16 seeds Saturday, the Cougars are expected to be one of the four regional No. 1s.“Just stay locked in. Don’t look ahead,” senior guard Marcus Sasser said of the closing six-game stretch of the regular season, which continues Thursday night against SMU at Moody Coliseum.

For all the talk of how underappreciated and disrespected the AAC is — UH coach Kelvin Sampson has a strong opinion on the subject — the remaining schedule can do more harm than good. Purdue can afford a loss to Indiana and Northwestern and still be a consensus No. 1 seed. And Alabama barely got a slap on wrist for a 24-point loss at Oklahoma. As of Wednesday, the computers love the Cougars, UH was No. 1 in the NCAA Evaluation Tool , No. 1 in ESPN’s Basketball Power Index and No. 1 in KenPom.com.

Most major bracket projections, among them ESPN.com, USA Today, The Sporting News and Bracket W.A.G., have the Cougars comfortably as a No. 1 seed. Only once before, in 1983, have the Cougars been a No. 1.
