Casino dell'Aurora, the Rome villa that has been in the Ludovisi family for four centuries, recently failed to sell at auction for a fifth time.
Before she was Her Serene Highness the Principessa Rita Boncompagni Ludovisi, she was Rita Carpenter.
The villa, in the heart of Rome, features “Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto,” the only known ceiling painted by Caravaggio. An Italian court has ordered that Villa Ludovisi be put up for auction, which is scheduled for Jan. 18.Rome's a far cry from San Antonio and the princess' previous life in Texas when she was referred to as “the ugly duckling” of St. Mary’s Academy in a Dec. 29, 1981, San Antonio Star article.
Rita Carpenter grew up in Terrell Hills and attended Alamo Heights Junior High before she moved to Austin. Rita Jenrette, the wife of former U.S. Rep. John Jenrette who was convicted in FBI case, gives an interview at the Chicago Playboy Club in 1981. Ms. Jenrette posed nude for the 1981 March issue of Playboy and was in Chicago to promote the magazine story.After the family moved to Austin, Rita Carpenter graduated from the University of Texas with honors with a degree in history and minor in political science.
"He stopped her and talked to her," her mother told the Evening News."She wouldn't go out with him at first. She wanted to be very cautious. He kept calling her and finally went out with him."
