STANFORD — UCLA coach Chip Kelly made a switch at quarterback on Saturday for the second time this season, going back to veteran Ethan Garbers against Stanford after five up-and-down games with true freshman Dante Moore at the helm.
The move comes after the Bruins began Pac-12 play with a 1-2 record, as Kelly has not yet settled on a successor to Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who left for the NFL following five seasons as UCLA’s quarterback. Garbers, a redshirt junior, started the season opener against Coastal Carolina at quarterback after serving as Thompson-Robinson’s backup for the last two seasons — though he split playing time with Moore. Garbers entered Saturday’s game completing 11 of 18 passes this season for 134 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Moore, a five-star recruit, took over the starting position in week two against San Diego State and has started every game since — to mixed results. He led the Bruins to a 25-17 win over No. 13 Washington State and is seventh in the country in passing yards per completion, butlast week in a 36-24 loss. Moore threw three interceptions, and for the third straight game had an interception returned for a touchdown.
The third quarterback on the depth chart, Kent State transfer Collin Schlee, left last week’s game with an injury after running for 80 yards on six carries. He was declared as “unavailable” by Kelly early in the week.
