Bruins racked up 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks against Coastal Carolina, but also four offside penalties

Only one sound could be heard above the crashing of shoulder pads against sleds Tuesday morning at the UCLA football team’s morning practice, and that was linebacker coach Ken Norton’s voice. It’s likely Norton was referring to San Diego State’s average of 229 rushing yards after its 2-0 start this season. The Bruins’ defense will face the Aztecs’ rushing attack on Saturday afternoon after giving up only 56 rushing yards in their season opener against Coastal Carolina.

“We had a very, very aggressive defensive line,” UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. “There’s also, ‘Hey, let’s sit back and not get offsides,’ but then you might not get 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks. I think there’s a fine line and the amount of offsides we had was unacceptable, but you’d rather err on our guys being aggressive and attacking than to just sit back.”

“When we make a play and we come off the sideline, just like every other coach and player is coming up to you and is like, ‘Good play!’ He’s there right there with us,” defensive lineman David Magna said. “It’s just awesome having him down there. And he’s a great coach.” “When they get the ball, they run with anger and they try to hurt the opponent,” quarterback Ethan Garbers said after the game. “Coach Kelly this week was really big on, on being physical and being the tougher team. That mindset definitely transfers over to everybody on the team.”
