Uber just cut 600 jobs from its India offices as the ride-hailing giant's wave of layoffs go global

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi speaks onstage at Day 1 of the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit 2018 at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on October 9, 2018 in Beverly Hills, California.

One source estimated that Uber India employed between 2,4000 and 2,500 employees before Tuesday's cuts, meaning the cuts would hit approximately 25% of the workforce. Uber Technologies Inc will cut around 600 jobs in India as part of its plans to lay off 23% of its global workforce, as the company navigates a lockdown that has brought businesses in the country to a grinding halt.

"The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber IndiaSA with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce," Uber India and South Asia President Pradeep Parameswaran said.
