In this snow/cloud composite imagery, snow on the ground appears as white, low clouds appear as pale yellow and high clouds appear as light pink.The contiguous U.S. kicked off 2022 with its coolest January since 2014. However, the month still ranked nearly a degree warmer than average across the nation.

The average January temperature across the contiguous U.S. was 31.0 degrees F — 0.9 of a degree above the 20th-century average — ranking in the middle third of January months in the 128-year record. January precipitation for the contiguous U.S. was 1.60 inches , tied with 2009 for 14th-driest January on record. It was also the driest January since 2014.
