The ensuing batter, McMahon, hit a shot to left-center that just eluded Marte’s outstretched glove and went for a bases-clearing double that tied it 6-6. Buck Showalter cited Marte’s strong throwing arm in the spacious center field at Coors for his decision to start Marte at the position over Tommy Pham and Mark Canha, both of whom had more recent playing time in center.
