We chat with Blockbuster stars tyleralvarez, MadeleineArthur & TheOlgaMerediz about the Netflix workplace sitcom and how it normalizes their diverse characters:
Before audiences took to streaming platforms for their viewing, video rental stores were the talk of the town, though now, only one remains in Blockbuster. Set in the eponymous store, the workplace comedy centers on the manager and employees of the last-ever Blockbuster as they try to keep the business alive in their small town.
Madeleine Arthur: I mean, I just love the scripts right away. It's so funny, Vanessa Ramos, who created the series, is such a talented writer. I grew up going to Blockbuster, I love Blockbuster. Hannah was a really fun, quirky character. And to get to work with everyone involved was really what caught my eye, and I was excited to join the Blockbuster family.
I couldn't agree more. There's something, much like Ted Lasso, that's so wholesome about this show and that resonates so well. One thing I love is the diversity of this cast. Tyler, I love that you get to represent the LGBTQ+ community, as much as you and Olga represent Latinx community as well. What was it like for both of you to bring that representation to a big mainstream sitcom?
No, I very much agree. I love that your characters are not just based on those elements, it helps normalize it for everything going forward. Madeleine, Hannah is hilarious, especially in everything she does wrong. What is it like exploring that character, getting to her heart, and finding a way to bring her to life on screen in a way that can be relatable to audiences?
