Citing the rising number of pedestrian-related crashes, the Texas Department of Transportation started its “Be Safe. Drive Smart” annual safety campaign by deploying sandwich-board-wearing “human billboards” at major highway locations.
The mobile messages were in The Galleria on Wednesday, followed by Gulfton and downtown Houston by Minute Maid Park on Thursday.
“Only 1 percent of traffic crashes in Texas involve pedestrians, yet pedestrians account for 19 percent of all roadway deaths,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said in a press release. “That’s because pedestrians lack the protective equipment — airbags, seat belts and bumpers — common to vehicles. To keep our most vulnerable road users safe, we urge motorists to always be on the lookout for people walking.
TxDOT officials have said the key to lowering that trend is increased driver education and urging pedestrians to be more vigilant. As part of the campaign, officials urge drivers to properly stop at crosswalks and limit distractions from on-board systems and cell phones. Pedestrians are encouraged to only use crosswalks and wear bright clothing at night.
“Imagine thinking that telling people to drive the speed limit and not look at their phones would have any affect on roadway deaths when you spend BILLIONS make racetracks,” tweeted Kevin DeGood, director of infrastructure policy at the Washington-based Center For American Progress.
