GEORGE TOWN: Two policemen have been remanded to facilitate investigations for allegedly extorting RM5,000 bribe from a vape entrepreneur.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission obtained the five-day remand on Thursday , under the MACC Act 2009.
The remand order was issued by assistant registrar Farhana Abu Hassan at the police central lock-up in Bayan Baru. Those convicted under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009, could face a fine of not less than 10 times of the value of the gratification or RM1mil, whichever is higher, imprisonment of up to 20 years or both.She however refused to elaborate further on the matter.
It is learned that the 46-year-old inspector and 53-year-old sergeant were detained separately at Kepala Batas in an operation between 7pm and 10pm. They are attached to the North Seberang Prai police headquarters and are believed to have solicited for the bribe as an inducement not to act against the vape entrepreneur for conducting his business during the conditional movement control order .
